FUTD ORGANIZES ITS FIRST CAPACITY BUILDING WORKSHOP FOR STAFF

The Federal University of Transportation, Daura under the leadership of its pioneer Vice-Chancellor, Hon. Prof. Umar Adam Katsayal, mni has organized its first capacity building workshop for both academic and non-teaching staff of the University.

The two-day capacity building workshop titled “The Role of Management in the Prevention of Avoidable Litigations in courts Arising from Poor Handling of Disciplinary Cases in Nigeria Public Universities”, was held between Monday 8th and Tuesday, 9th July, 2024.

The workshop was organized by the University in collaboration with A.A. Dogara & Co.

In his welcome remarks during the opening ceremony, the Ag. Registrar of the University, Malam Muhammad Ibrahim welcomed all participants and urged them to pay attention to the presentations to be made during the workshop.

He said that the University had organized the workshop to arm its pioneer staff with knowledge they needed to efficiently handle disciplinary cases as they come.

On his own part, Barrister Ibrahim A. Azara who is the Principal Partner, A.A. Dogara & Co, expressed his profound gratitude to Almighty Allah who made it possible for the August event to take place.

“I must also appreciate the Vice Chancellor, Principal Officers and members of staff for the golden opportunity given to us to serve this prestigious infant University in this capacity.

“The Universities are the depositories and propagators of the highest social, ethical, and cultural values of the Society, and centers of research and teaching where the cardinal prerequisites include academic brilliance with unimpeachable integrity.

“It is a sector development resource and the most important input of the production process for a knowledge-based economy, focusing on teaching, research, information transfer, and technology development to bring economic prosperity.

“Universities as academic and moral training grounds have the unique opportunity to initiate and sustain the moral revival that is so desperately needed in our nation today, especially discipline”, he said.

He further highlighted that academic activities are now part of increasingly complex services in which academics and non-teaching working in academic environment consciously or unconsciously encounter some legal challenges affecting their work.

Clearly globalization, networking, technology especially in an enlightened Community such as FUTD, Staff and Students are conscious and will become more conscious of their rights and are continually raising up questions of academic and legal standards and duty of care and one of the most profound questions is of law and ethics in an academic environment”, he further explained.

He stated that while taking actions on violators of Universities’ laws, regulations and statutes, the University staff must as well be conscious of what their actions or inactions may cause.

Delivering his address, the Vice-Chancellor of the University, Hon. Prof. Umar Adam Katsayal, mni welcomed the presenters to the University and wished them successful presentations.

He stressed that his administration would continue to pay attention to staff training and development as these are very paramount to the development of any organization, especially the newly established like the FUTD.

The Vice-Chancellor further called on the participants to pay attention to the presentation so that they could get the best out of them.

While speaking on the presenters, he described them as experienced individuals who had seen it all and had trained many consummate lawyers across the country.

FUTD News Bulletin reports that during the two-day workshop, six different papers were presented by the presenters.

The presenters were Barrister Ibrahim A. Azara, Prof. Bashir Y. Ibrahim and Prof. Abubakar M. Madaki.

Barrister Ibrahim A. Azara presented two papers titled, “Educational matters & the concept of corporate legal personality” and “Concept of fair hearing, bias & exceptions to the rule”, while Prof. Bashir Y. Ibrahim presented on, “Examination malpractice and other matters, issues and challenges” and “Disciplinary process in Nigerian Universities”.

FUTD News Bulletin further reports that, Prof. Abubakar M. Madaki made his presentations on the topics, “Doctrine of negligence & vicarious liability” and “Doctrine of misconduct, disciplinary procedure and the concept “for good cause and for good cause shown”.

In his vote of thanks, the Training Officer of the University, Mal. Abubakar Maida commended the University Management under the leadership of Prof. Umar Adam Katsayal, mni and A.A. Dogara & Co, for organizing the event.
